The long awaiting prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy is clever, funny and a treat for the eyes. The famous tale centers around Bilbo Baggins, the lovable Hobbit and uncle of LOTR's lead character Frodo Baggins. Bilbo is persuaded by the iconic wizard Gandalf and a clan of heroic dwarfs to come on an 'adventure' and attempt to defeat the almighty dragon Smaug. This film is thoroughly entertaining, and will please a wide audience with it's script, story and characters. I've heard that a lot of viewers say they found The Hobbit to be too similar to LOTR, having been cut into a trilogy when the original book is singular and quite short. However, I believe that this link is too small and disagree, I found The Hobbit to be much more suitable for a family audience than the previous films. It had comical elements, and did not have a story that was difficult to follow unlike the far more complex plots Tolkien wove into LOTR. Furthermore, the film managed to seem fast paced and fun despite being nearly 3 hours long. This is an aspect I respect writers for when a film achieves this, as running time will sometimes repel viewers. The cast were brilliant, and they all portrayed character's that were individually entertaining and unique.
Rating: ****
Highlight: 'Have they got any chips?', Gollum's appearance
See if: You're a fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, also recommended for family viewing.
Don't see if: You're not a fan of fantasy films, other than that i see no reason not to go and see this film! If you see the trailer and don't like what you see, chances are you won't find the film any different it's very much what you see on the cover.
